ABOUT OLIVIA'S KIDS AGAINST CANCER
Olivia’s Kids Against Cancer is a program of the Olivia Hudson Foundation. This program was created to help fulfill the three initiatives given in the OHF mission statement.
When a devastating illness strikes someone in your family, it truly affects the entire family. In the case of a child suffering from pediatric brain cancer, this problem is multiplied ten-fold. The parents must consult with the doctors on a daily basis, try to weigh which medical options are best for their sick child, hope they have enough insurance to cover all the mounting costs, determine how to take the needed time off work and a myriad of other issues. The parents are so devastated by all of these factors that they can understandably not focus on the everyday needs of the other children.
The other siblings, although they are not ill, can suffer greatly also. Their age will directly affect how they handle this family emergency. Younger children may not understand the depth of the problem but they do know something is wrong with their brother or sister and with mom and dad. They may start to act out, trying to get more needed attention from their parents. An older sibling may become depressed, act out in a negative way or even blame themselves for their sibling’s illness. No matter how these issues play out, they are signs of stress being displayed by the siblings.
It is for these reasons that we have developed the OLIVIA’S KIDS AGAINST CANCER PROGRAM. The need to help both parents and siblings of children suffering from pediatric brain cancer is overwhelmingly clear.
To support the parents of children who suffer from pediatric brain cancer
To support the siblings of children who suffer from pediatric brain cancer
To mobilize and empower young people in the fight against pediatric brain cancer.
The Olivia’s Kids Against Cancer program will specifically target two of our initiatives directly: supporting families and educating the public and youth, in particular, to childhood brain cancer. This will be accomplished by holding events to raise youth awareness and participation in the fight against pediatric brain cancer. Establishing educational programs that will link Olivia’s Kids Against Cancer to community based organizations (CBO’s), youth groups and organizations, which will facilitate direct interaction between cancer patient’s families and O.K.’s youth.
